Some plant choices for ground cover:
Yarrow - can withstand foot traffic, grows in poor, dry soil and needs little care once established.
Wooly Yarrow - has attractive small silvery plumes and a soothing scent.
Alyssum - grow 6 inches, once established reseeds itself, tolerant to dry soil and attractive when in bloom.
Thyme - low growing, spreads quickly, colorful - light yellow to deep gray green.  Requires dry, poor soil.
Corsican Mint - too tender to walk on, but it does make a very tight mat, about 1 inch high.
Silver Mound Wormwood - forms a dense, silvery mount.  It can withstand light foot traffic and takes drought well.
Sweet Woodruff -  a shade loving ground cover with a sweet fragrance, a rapid grower with tiny white flowers.
Wood Strawberry - extremely fast growing and develops small fruit.  One plant may put out up to 40 runners a year.
Speedwell - fond of dry, infertile soils.  A good lawn substitue, but does not like traffic.
      Ivy - year round coverage.
      Periwinkle - low growing vine
